Every year, TGPS is honored to participate in the Dream in Green: Green Schools Challenge, a dynamic initiative that empowers young learners to become stewards of the environment. The Green Schools Challenge provides an opportunity for students to engage in meaningful, hands-on activities designed to save energy and water, both at school and at home. From January through March, our learners completed the following challenges; Alternative Transportation, Green Living, and Food Security.
The Alternative Transportation Challenge encouraged our Kindergarten learners to explore the environmental impact of various modes of transport—air, land, and sea—fostering awareness of how travel choices affect pollution and climate change. By creating posters that promoted eco-friendly alternatives like walking, biking, and carpooling, learners became environmental stewards, inspiring their school community to reduce their carbon footprint.
Our 3rd and 4th grade learners developed a meaningful understanding of air pollution sources and their connection to climate change and environmental health. Monitoring air quality in various locations encouraged eco-conscious thinking and empowered learners to advocate for cleaner air and a more sustainable future.
By completing the Green Living Challenge, students developed a deeper appreciation for local biodiversity, especially the vital role of pollinators in the ecosystem. Creating their own maps based on schoolyard observations nurtured both environmental curiosity and early geographic awareness.
Through the Food Security Challenge, learners discovered how seeds grow and thrive, and how nature helps them travel to new places through wind, water, and animals. Making seed bombs for guerrilla gardening gave them a hands-on way to care for the Earth, encouraging them to spread native plants and create greener, healthier spaces in their community.
Our 2nd grade students successfully explored various food preservation methods and gained hands-on experience by pickling their own carrots. This engaging challenge deepened their understanding of how pickling extends the shelf life of food while adding flavor.
Through these challenges, our learners are becoming more environmentally conscious and developing essential skills that will help them contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.
